In an extraordinary rise from NRL player to coach within a year, Manly have locked in club legend Kieran Foran as their permanent head coach on a multi-year deal.
It’s now official - Fozball is here to stay.
Kieran Foran, just 35 years old, has signed a three-year contract to become head coach of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.
He is now locked in at Brookvale until the end of 2029.
Foran’s new head coach title begins from Tuesday, ending his tenure as an interim coach.
It has been an extraordinary rise to coaching prominence for Foran, who only finished playing on September 6 last year.
Foran’s long-term retention is a significant boost for Manly ahead of Thursday night’s big game against rivals South Sydney at 4 Pines Park.
“I care deeply about this club, and I want what’s best for everyone involved in it. I will do everything within my power to make sure it’s a success,” Foran said.
“It’s been wonderful working with this group of players over the past few months and helping them to build belief is something I have really enjoyed.
“I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by some incredible staff, and they have played a significant part in the success that we’ve had so far.
“I feel absolutely loved and supported by all our members and fans. It makes you want to bounce out of bed each and every morning, wanting to make our community proud.
“I believe we’re capable of achieving great things this year and we will continue to work extremely hard to make sure we give ourselves every chance of achieving that.
“I’m truly honoured to be the head coach of a club that means so much to me, a club that has played a significant part in not just my footy career, but my entire life.”
Sea Eagles players claim ‘Fozball’ – a colloquial term for Manly’s new playing style – has freed them up to play some eyes-up footy, with Foran encouraging the playing group to take chances without heavy censure.
Foran was named Manly interim coach after Anthony Seibold was sacked after three games this season.
After a winless start, Foran inspired Manly to a stunning 52-18 round four win over the Dolphins in Redcliffe.
In a remarkable effort, Foran has since won seven from nine games as head coach.
“We’ve been impressed with everything Kieran has done since taking on the interim role and are delighted to appoint him for the next three years,” said Manly chairman Scott Penn.
“The belief and passion he has instilled in the playing group has more than delivered on our expectations.
“Kieran’s deep connection to the club, extensive playing experience, and leadership qualities make him an outstanding choice to guide the Sea Eagles into the next chapter.
“We are focused on competing for premierships and Kieran knows first-hand what it takes to bring the Sea Eagles continued success.”
Manly currently sits in fifth place amid some early fears that the club was a candidate for the wooden spoon.
Coaching candidates including Brad Arthur, Michael Ennis and Matt Ballin were eased aside as Manly officials quickly recognised Foran’s immediate impact as head coach.
“You only need to look around to see the uplift Kieran has brought to the club in just a matter of months - he has brought clarity to how we want to play, how we want to represent the club and the standards we expect every day,” said Manly CEO Jason King.
“He has the utmost respect from everyone associated with Manly, from our owners and directors, our players and staff, and certainly from our members and fans.
“We believe Kieran is the right person to lead our team into the future, and we’re confident in the direction he is setting.”
